The dog is our beloved Sambo. Daddy and I were the only real dog lovers in the family. I cried and cried and searched for days for Sambo when he ran away.

This was taken in our house on Winona Court. Our grandfather clock in the background; I don't know the history of it, but it was always there since I was born. I was about 8 when this was taken, so it must be about 1937.

Franklin Grist in service during World War I
Status: Located; Virginia Grist: "Gladys went there with him for the duration. His job was to go by train after deserting soldiers who were often southern, black, afraid of water, and of going overseas. Gladie [Gladys Strite] found them a place to live in town with lovely couple, in a real house! And she got a job in the payroll office. There were regular dances for the servicemen. Both loved to dance and were very good at it. Few women at the base, many partners! They were very happy and FJ never got shipped out. When the war ended, I think he went right to NYC for training to become a furrier."
