- George was born on a farm in Graham Lakes Township the son of John & Ellen Peterson Coffitt. George grew up in South Dakota and attended schools in South Shore, Rivello, Summit, and Sioux Falls. He worked as a meat cuter in his father's meat market in Sioux Falls until 1928 when he moved to Woonsocket, SD to work as a meat cutter. On April 28, 1929 he and Esther Stegberg were married at Woonsocket. In 1934 the Coffitt family moved to a farm in Nobles County near Fulda. Together they lived there and raised their two daughters. In 1967 George retired from farming and they moved to a house in Fulda and have made their home there since. George worked for six years as a meat cutter at the Red Owl store in Fulda. George suffered a stroke and was a patient at the Murray County Hospital for 10 days before passing away. George was a good and faithful member of the Fulda Presbyterain Church and served as Elder. George was also a past Master of the Fulda Masonic Lodge and presently belonged to the Slayton Lodge. George received his 50 year masonic pin several years ago. He served as secretary of the Prairie Hill Cemetery Board and on the Country School Dist. #2 Board for many years. George enjoyed all sports, bowled in a Fulda League for many years and especially enjoyed being with his family as he was a devoted husband and father.
George & Esther are the parents of Melba Irene Coffitt Sugg & Marilyn (Ralph) Brown.
George's siblings include Roy Coffitt of Sioux Falls, SD; Minerva (Bob) Biship of Racine, WI; & Virginia (Stanley) Soutar of Luvurne, MN. George was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held April 19 from Fulda Presbyterian Church, Rev. Ken Honius officiating. [1]
