Appleton Man Injured When Car Hits Train

NEENAH -- a 28-year-old Appleton man, John R. Grist, 1112 N. Leminwah St., escaped without serious injury early this morning when his car slammed into a Soo Line train at the West Cecil Street crossing.

According to Neenah police, the mishap occurred at 2:35 a.m. when Grist's 1960 auto, traveling west on W. Cecil, struck the second car in a five-unit train being pulled by a Soo Line switch engine. Extensive damage was done to the front end of the car.

The Grist vehicle skidded at least eight feet before it struck the train. The impact, police said, knocked one of the railroad cars partially off the track. The railroad car, however, was routed back onto the track a short time later.

Grist was taken to Theda Clark Hospital in the Neenah ambulance and reported in satisfactory condition early this morning. According to a hospital spokesman, his injuries include chin lacerations and abrasions to the nose, arms and legs.
